Cut Down on Barking with Dog Bark Collar

November 18, 2024 | by Charlie M.

The dog bark collar is a good option to get small dogs to stop barking when other methods have failed. The dog bark collar sends a mild electrical stimulation, vibration, or sound that alerts the dog to stop barking. It is based loosely on Pavlov’s theory that reinforces repeated stimulation to produce an outcome, in this case, applying electrical stimulation to prevent barking. The end goal is to send a message to the dog that mild discomfort will happen each time barking happens at inappropriate times.

The dog bark collar also is more consistent in training the dog to reduce barking when compared to human training which can vary at times and be inconsistent. The consistency of the collar lets the dog know that if he or she barks the consequence can be negative and thus cuts down on barking to avoid the consequences. The dog bark collar also has the benefit of relieving the owner of having to constantly admonish the dog to stop barking every time he or she sees an unfamiliar human, dog, or something else that may elicit barking.

By using the electric dog bark collar, you can relieve both owner and dog in areas where there are noise restrictions. The dog bark collar also helps the dog have a tamed appearance and fit in better with dogs who are fully tamed.

The dog bark collar can be adjusted to fit different-sized dogs of different temperaments so as not to produce too harsh of a stimulus. Allowing the dog owner to adjust stimulus settings will ensure an ethical solution when training the dog to not bark.

Pros and Cons of Electronic Dog Bark Collars

Pros

  • Effective in reducing barking. Immediate stimulation (jolt, sound, or vibration) gives the dog notice that barking has consequences.
  • Consistent. Each time the dog barks, the collar sends mild stimulation which gives the dog a constant reminder that barking will bring about an unwanted stimulation.
  • No active involvement. The hands-off nature of dog bark collars makes them ideal for owners who do not want to get involved in teaching their dogs not to bark.

Cons

  • Misuse or overuse of electronic dog bark collars. If it is relied on too heavily or misused, the dog bark collar may cause more issues rather than solving them.
  • The dog is sometimes physically discomforted by the collar if it is fitted improperly. This could include irritation of the skin, chaffing, and sometimes harm.
  • Does not get to the root issue of barking (ie: boredom, stress, or pain.) The collar needs to be used in conjunction to getting to the root cause of barking.
  • Some breeds of dogs do not respond well to the dog bark collars. It is important to find an alternative if the dog you own is not a good fit for the collar.
